The Android and iPhone apps are coming to Google Play and the App Store soon. This page will carry the download buttons the moment they’re live.

What is Priority Zero?

Priority Zero is a to-do list built around one number. Every task gets a priority from 0 (do it now) to 9 (fine if it never happens) and that number does real work: it sorts your list and it sets a due date automatically, so a “3” knows it’s due by Friday without you touching a calendar.

Two more tricks. Type a date into the task itself, “call the bank by Friday”, and the app reads it and sets the due date for you. And for the one task you keep dodging there’s the chirp: a gentle cricket that nags you at intervals until the thing is actually done. Your lists sync across all your devices, so the phone, the computer and the browser always agree.

Getting started

  1. Open the app in your browser at priorityzero.web.app, or install it from your browser’s install option to keep it on your home screen or desktop.
  2. Create an account with your email address and a password. Your lists live in your account, which is what makes the syncing work. Leave Stay signed in ticked unless you’re on a shared computer.
  3. Make a list. Tap + New list in the sidebar and name it. Shopping, Work, Household, whatever you need. All Tasks at the top always shows everything from every list in one place.
  4. Add a task. Type into the Add a task box and press Enter. The task is created with priority 5. Keep typing to add the next one straight away.

The priority system

Tap a task’s priority badge to see this guide in the app. Each number means something and sets the due date shown:

Priority Meaning Automatic due date
0 Do immediately ASAP today
1 Do today today
2 Do by tomorrow tomorrow
3 Do by end of week the coming Friday
4 Do within 2 weeks 2 weeks from now
5 Do by end of month last day of this month
6 Do within a month 1 month from now
7 Do within a couple of months 2 months from now
8 Can wait for a while 6 months from now
9 Doesn’t matter if I don’t actually do it no due date

With a mouse, hover over a priority badge and tiny arrows appear: up makes it more urgent, down less. On a phone, open the task and change it there.

Due dates: three ways, one winner

A due date can come from three places and there’s a strict pecking order:

  1. You set it yourself in the task’s detail panel. A manual date always wins and is never overwritten.
  2. The app reads it from your words. Write “renew passport by the 12th” or “tidy shed next week” and the due date is set from the phrase. Your text is left exactly as you typed it.
  3. The priority fills it in using the table above, when neither of the first two applies.

Overdue tasks show up in red so they can’t hide.

Editing, completing and finding tasks

Tap a task’s text to open its detail panel. There you can edit the wording, change the priority or list, set or clear the due date, turn on the chirp or delete the task. Changes save as you make them.

Tick the box on the right of any task to complete it. It slides into the collapsible Done section at the bottom, where it stays until you delete it. Untick to bring it back. When Done is expanded a button lets you delete all completed tasks in one go.

The sort control orders your list by priority, name, creation date or due date. The search box filters as you type. And every view has a Share/Export button that sends your tasks out as a CSV file by email, WhatsApp or anything else on your share sheet.

The chirp: your one-task nag

Pick the task you keep avoiding:

  1. Open its detail panel and switch on Chirp at me until this is done.
  2. The app now chirps at you every 30 minutes (adjustable from 5 to 120 minutes in Settings) during your working hours.
  3. The chirp stops the moment you tick the task done, delete it or switch the toggle off.

Only one task can chirp at a time. Choosing a new one automatically releases the old one, and the app checks with you first. On your phone the chirp keeps working even with the app closed and the phone locked. In a browser it sounds while the tab is open, and a signed-in phone covers you the rest of the time.

Set your working days and hours in Settings so it never chirps at the weekend or during dinner. You can also choose the sound (Cricket, Bird, Beep, Singing bowl, Wolf howl or Dog bark), the pitch and the volume, and test it before committing. On Android allow notifications and the battery optimisation exemption when asked, or the phone may silence the chirp to save power. On iPhone allow notifications, as they’re how the chirp sounds when the app is closed.

Settings and your account

The gear icon at the bottom of the sidebar holds working days and hours, all the chirp options, a light and dark theme switch and your account controls including sign out and delete account. Settings sync too, so every device honours the same working hours.
