- Shows separate walking and running step counts.
- Estimates distance and calories.
- Lets you set a countdown step target that plays a short fanfare when you reach it.
Frequently asked questions
The app is not counting my steps.
Step counting needs the physical activity / motion permission. Check it is granted:
- Android: Settings > Apps > Step Counter > Permissions > Physical activity > Allow.
- iOS: Settings > Step Counter > Motion & Fitness > On.
Your phone also needs to be with you as you walk, and it must have a step sensor (most
modern phones do). Step counting does not work on an emulator or simulator.
My daily total seems to start partway through the day.
The app can only read steps from the moment it first runs each day, so steps taken before
you first open the app that day may not be included. Your session counter is not affected,
as it counts from whenever you reset it.
How are distance and calories calculated?
Distance is estimated from your step count and your height (used to estimate your stride
length). Calories are estimated from your weight and the distance walked or run. These are
estimates and will not be perfectly accurate. You can add or update your height and weight
in the app.
The walking and running counts do not look quite right.
The app estimates whether you are walking or running from your phone's motion. This is
approximate, especially at the boundary between a brisk walk and a slow jog. We are
continuing to improve it.
Does resetting the session affect my daily total?
No. Resetting the session counter only zeroes the session count. It does not change your
daily total or affect any other fitness app on your phone.
Does Step Counter work with Apple Health, Google Fit, or Fitbit?
The app reads the same device step sensor those apps use, but it does not connect to them
or change their data. Your other apps keep working normally.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your steps, distance, height, and weight stay on your device. See our Privacy Policy:
https://www.thomasdstoker.com/step-counter-privacy-policy/
How do I remove my data?
Uninstalling the app removes all of its data from your device.
